How to Choose the Best Coyote Hunting Lights?
In order reach the right coyote hunting light there are some factors which you have to take into account. Before you make a purchase decision, go through the below sections, it will help you to make a worthy purchase for sure.
Coyote night lights come in three different styles and which one you should pick that completely depends on you. With the style, you are most comfortable only that would be the ideal type for you. However, I have demonstrated the advantage and disadvantages of all types, hope that will help you to understand better.
These are the most common style of flashlight and we have been seeing these all our life. Handheld night lights come with a lot of options and they can deliver the highest power output. Not only that, handheld night lights are large too and comes with really long range power.
Having said that, if you are about to hit the field alone, then handheld light is not your thing. Your hands will be busy holding the gun and aiming, so who is going to hold the light?
Some came up with such ideas like mounting the light on the tree, or vehicle with rope or anything else. But the problem here is, doesn’t matter how powerful the light is, it won’t cover the entire large field. So what if you set the light in one direction and after a while coyotes moved on the other side?
Would you go, unmount the light and mount it again in the needed direction? Why should you do this hassle when there is the easiest way? Well, you are going to find out in the later section.
And on the flip side, if you have someone with you in hunting, he or she can hold the light for you and that would be fantastic.
Here is the best option for single hunters, the gun mounted night light. As the name suggests, these lights are supposed to mount on the top of the weapon and they fit well. This type is my favorite, even though I don’t go hunting alone.
Gun mounted lights are highly powered full and the advantage of using this is, you can do the scan and aim at the same time. And since the light is mounted on the gun, you will get light wherever you aim. And don’t worry about the weight, manufacturers make them lightweight so that you can carry the weapon comfortably.
Along with these advantages, weapon mounted lights brings some disadvantages too. First of all, these lights drain the battery faster and that is because they don’t use heavy large batteries to keep the thing lightweight for you. So, you might need to carry a couple of pair of fully charged batteries with you.
The second one is, these lights will shine the different areas with the movement of the gun. However, I keep a small handheld light with me always and when I am moving the gun I turn off the gun mounted light and turn on the handheld one.
And the last style is a headlamp, as you can guess, these lamps are head mounted and the light falls wherever you look at. These lamps are enough powerful to see some coyote clearly but that being it is the less effective light.
Since the light in on your forehead, when you look in the scope to aim, the light won’t fall on the proper direction. However, the main drawback of headlamps is because of the size issue they come with batteries that don’t last long, forcing you to carry additional pairs.
Lastly, handheld flashlight and gun mounted lights are the best for comfortable hunting.
I strongly support ethical hunting and you should too. Ethical hunting means being on a range. Ethical hunting range is limited at the night and that have some valid reasons too. In order to identify the target, you need to be in range, otherwise, you would not have clear visibility and might end up killing any other animal.
Plus, coyote and dogs look similar, so you to make sure that the animal you are going to shoot in a while is the intended one. Never make any assumption just by seeing the body shape or hair. The shooting range would be under 100 yards, at this range you will be able to detect anything clearly.
Always try to bring long range lights even if you will be shooting in short range, trust me it will help. For example, if you are going to hunt in 100 yards, you can take a light that comes with 200-yard power.
Size and weight are always overlooked, especially by newbies. Both the weight and size has a lot to do with your overall hunting experience. But that said, getting the proper balance is a little tough. If you are looking for power and long term service, then you might need to compromise on the weight a little bit. Since heavy powered batteries come with a good weight.
However, coyote hunting will require you to scan through the field and it is highly important that you get a lightweight model, otherwise, you will get tired with no time.
If you have heavy gun mounted light that will make it hard for you to balance the gun and also carrying it. And you are going to find difficulty while aiming as well. Choose a gun mounted light that has weight less than 1 pounds, otherwise, it would be tough to handle.
In term of the headlamp, heavy headlamps are the worst. They are so painful that you might even pack your gears and come back to home. Headlamp should be very lightweight so that you can be comfortable.
Handheld lights weight doesn’t really matter a lot since there would be another person who is supposed to hold it. But still, try to choose a handheld the light that has weight less than 3- pounds.
The light color plays a huge role in hunting. There are mainly three types of light which come with their own set of advantage and disadvantages, let’s have a look.
It is the brightest color and also the most intense. They offer a great range and also a very bright beam. Even after being so powerful most hunter doesn’t choose this, especially for coyote hunting. The intense white light spoils the natural night vision and it is highly noticeable by the animal which might push them away from you.
This light is very dim and highly popular for coyote hunting. Not only for coyote, but this light color is also very popular for night hunting and the main reason behind is, most of the animals can’t detect the presence of light. Which allows you to hunt comfortably. That said, red lights don’t offer a good amount of range, for under 100-yard it is good.
Greenlight is in the middle of the red and white light color. It got mixed features from both colors. The green light is brighter than the red light and less than a white light color. And not as intense as white light nor too dim. Like white light, the green light doesn’t kill natural night vision.
Some high-end models come with high-quality rechargeable batteries, and some don’t. Most cheap models don’t come with batteries, in that case, you have purchased separately. You got to be a little careful when choosing the battery, you would want your night hunting light to run for a moderate of time at least.
But if you get started with low-quality batteries, they will run out of power with no time. So choose batteries that offers long run time. And purchase two to three pairs of rechargeable batteries, as a backup.
Of course, you want a night light that will serve you for a long period and in order to get that you need to ensure the quality of the light. Check the construction of the light, which materials were used? Are those material durable?
Lights that come with heavy-duty construction will cost a good amount of money for sure but that completely worth it. Choose a model that has sturdy construction so that it can withstand some wear and tears.
One way to ensure that you get a high-quality product is to buy from well-known brands. They will be expensive, but in the long run, you will win.
If you have already decided to go for a gun mounted night light, then check how they are supposed to be mounted on the gun. How difficult is it to mount or unmount them from the gun? I am sure, you don’t want to spend time hassling to mount or unmount the light.
Some top-notch light model comes with a mounting bracket which is easy to mount. However, before you buy one, make sure you check and pick the one that offers the easiest mounting process.
Except for the regular features, some night lights come with extra features which are such as controlling the intensity of the light, adjusting the beam from zoom to flat, and so on. These features will make your hunting easier for sure. That said, models that come with some extra features are expensive and that is pretty obvious.
I have seen most newbies going after cheap night lights. Let me tell you this, cheap products are cheap for some reason, they surely lack something needed which is why they cut the price. That said, expensive products do not always come with high-quality but it does most of the time.
So why take the risk? Just to save a few bucks, people ran after cheap items and in the long run, they end up paying more. Let me put it simply, good things will cost a good amount of money that’s obvious. If you have a budget problem, my suggestion would be to wait a little more, gather some money and then buy a top-notch model.
Some Tips on Coyote Hunting with Night Light
If you are now on this phase where you are choosing a night light for the coyote hunting, then I am assuming you know the basics of night hunting. Let’s have a look at some effective quick tips.
Keep the Light Little above the Target
If you are using a red color night light, then you would notice the glint of coyote eyes even from 500-yards of distance. Don’t worry about the visibility, you will get enough visibility to give the coyote a head shot.
Don’t Move the Light
When you have seen the coyote, do not move the light and neither increase or decrease the brightness. If you are using a red color light, you don’t have to stress about this much, since they won’t notice the light, but still, you have to be careful about the movement because coyote will notice the shadows moving.
The caller is a thing like a whistle, which creates a sound that attracts the coyotes. There are several kinds of calls, including, traditional, electronic and so on. However, being able to create a nice combination of both light and call can bring you a bunch of coyotes.
Scout the Hunting Area
Before you go night hunting, it is highly important that you scout the hunting area at least once in the day time. And the reason is, you will know the place, you can pre-plan where you will be staying, from where you can attack effectively, in which point your targets roam the most and so on.
Most importantly, you will get to know if there is any potential danger. Check is there any hole where you might get stuck, any big rock, etc.
Another wise thing you can do right before going for hunting is consulting with any people that live around your targeted hunting place. They will be able to give you the best and insider information such us, in which period of the night coyote comes the most, where they stay, from which angle you to scope, where you should set your spotlight, etc.
Get more than the needed amount of food and water with you. And food means take dry foods such as cookies, nuts, seeds, snacks, etc. And keep eating after a while, it will keep you well focused on the target.
